What Is Wanderleisure? A More Intentional Way to Dress for Life in Motion

What Is Wanderleisure? A More Intentional Way to Dress for Life in Motion

What Is Wanderleisure? A More Intentional Way to Dress for Life in Motion

Think about the clothes you wear the most.

They're probably not the trendiest pieces in your closet. They're the ones you reach for without thinking. The comfortable pants that somehow work for travel and dinner. The lightweight layer that always ends up in your carry-on. The top that feels just as appropriate for a workday as it does for a weekend away.

Those pieces earn their place because they make getting dressed easier.

The opposite is true, too. We've all bought clothes for one specific occasion, only to wear them once or twice before they quietly disappear into the back of the closet. The more we separate our wardrobes into "work clothes," "travel clothes," "weekend clothes," and "special occasion clothes," the more complicated getting dressed becomes.

At Encircled, we've spent years designing clothes that don't fit neatly into just one category. Along the way, we found ourselves using a word that perfectly described them.

Wanderleisure.

The New Word We Needed

Most clothing categories were created around a single purpose.

Athleisure is inspired by activewear. Workwear is designed for the office. Loungewear is made for relaxing at home. Travel clothing often prioritizes practicality over style. But life doesn't happen in separate categories anymore.

You might start your morning working from home, head into the city for a meeting, grab dinner with friends, and leave for a weekend trip the next day. Your schedule changes throughout the day, and your wardrobe has to keep up.

Instead of changing outfits every time your plans change, many women are looking for clothing that can do both.

That's why we started using the word wanderleisure, a combination of wanderlust and leisure. It describes clothing that's designed for movement, travel, and everyday life without sacrificing comfort or style. Instead of belonging to one category, it fits naturally into each of them.

Over the years, Encircled has helped popularize the idea of wanderleisure through thoughtfully designed collections that blur the lines between travel, work, and everyday life. Today, the term has become closely associated with our approach to creating versatile clothing that works wherever the day takes you.

What Is Wanderleisure?

To us, wanderleisure is less about a specific style of clothing and more about how your wardrobe works for you. Think of it as clothing for life in motion, pieces designed to move through different parts of your day with ease. It combines the comfort of your favourite everyday pieces with the versatility and polish to wear almost anywhere.

That could mean:

  • Pants that feel comfortable on a flight but still look polished enough for dinner.

  • A wrap that works as a scarf, an extra layer on the plane, or a lightweight topper on a cool evening.

  • A reversible top that gives you two different looks without taking up extra space in your suitcase.

  • Pieces that mix and match easily, so packing and getting dressed feels simpler.

Rather than asking, "What should I wear for this?" wanderleisure asks, "What can I wear for almost everything?"

How Wanderleisure Is Different From Athleisure

It's easy to confuse wanderleisure with athleisure because both prioritize comfort. The difference is what they're designed to do.

Athleisure grew from workout clothing. It's casual, sporty, and often made with performance fabrics intended for exercise. Wanderleisure starts somewhere else. It's inspired by travel and everyday life.

Instead of looking like gym clothes, wanderleisure clothing is designed to feel comfortable while still looking refined enough for work, travel, dinner, or everyday errands. The goal isn't to dress for the gym. It's to dress once and feel prepared for wherever the day takes you.

What Makes Clothing Wanderleisure?

Not every comfortable piece belongs in a wanderleisure wardrobe. The pieces that earn that title usually have a few things in common.

They Work in More Than One Setting

The best pieces don't need a specific occasion. A pair of trousers should feel just as appropriate for a long travel day as they do for lunch with friends. A soft button-up should work layered over a tank on vacation and tucked into pants for work.

The more ways you can wear something, the more valuable it becomes.

They're Comfortable Enough to Wear All Day

Comfort isn't just about stretchy fabric. It's about breathable materials, thoughtful fits, and clothing that doesn't need constant adjusting. When you're comfortable, you're more likely to wear a piece again and again.

They Mix Easily With Everything Else

A wanderleisure wardrobe isn't owning dozens of pieces. It's about choosing pieces that naturally work together.

Often, it's neutral colours, timeless silhouettes, and versatile layers that make it easy to create multiple outfits without needing an overflowing closet.

They're Designed to Travel Well

Whether you're packing for a weekend away or simply heading across town, clothing should make life easier.

Wrinkle-resistant fabrics, reversible details, practical pockets, and easy-care materials all help your wardrobe work a little harder.

Building Wanderleisure Outfits

One of the biggest advantages of wanderleisure is that getting dressed becomes simpler. Instead of planning an outfit for every occasion, you start with versatile pieces that naturally work together.

A simple outfit can look completely different with one thoughtful layer. Comfortable trousers paired with a reversible top work for sightseeing during the day, then take on a more polished feel with a blazer or wrap for dinner.

The goal isn't to create endless new looks. It's to get more wear out of the ones you already have, and to create wanderleisure outfits that can move through different parts of your day with only a few thoughtful changes.

Why Wanderleisure Fits the Way We Live Today

For many of us, the lines between work, travel, and everyday life have become blurred.

Business trips include sightseeing. Weekend getaways include answering emails. Remote work means coffee shops become offices. Even a typical Saturday can involve running errands, meeting friends, and going out for dinner.

Owning separate wardrobes for each of those moments doesn't always make sense anymore. Instead, many women are building smaller wardrobes filled with pieces that can adapt throughout the day.

It's one of the reasons capsule wardrobes have become so popular. Fewer pieces, chosen intentionally, often create more outfit possibilities than a closet full of clothes that only serve one purpose.

Building a Wanderleisure Wardrobe

You don't need to replace everything you own. Instead, pay attention to the pieces you already wear most often.

Ask yourself:

  • Which clothes do I pack every time I travel?

  • What pieces always feel comfortable?

  • Which items work for both casual and dressier occasions?

  • What do I reach for week after week?

Those are often the foundation of a wanderleisure wardrobe.

As you add new pieces, look for clothing that can do more than one job.

A reversible top like the Reversible Shell Top gives you two neckline options without taking up extra room in your suitcase. The Dressy Sweatpant has become a favourite for travellers because it feels comfortable enough for long flights while still looking polished enough for dinner.

The Wanderer Pant is another great example of wanderleisure clothing. It pairs just as easily with sneakers for exploring a new city as it does with a blazer for work. Lightweight layers like the Jetsetter Wrap or Everyday Twist Top are the kind of pieces that earn a permanent place in both your wardrobe and your carry-on.

Over time, you'll notice something interesting. You aren't just packing lighter. You're buying less, repeating outfits more confidently, and spending less time wondering what to wear. Your wardrobe starts working with you instead of asking you to keep buying more.

If you're not sure where to begin, we have guides on building travel capsules, packing lighter, and choosing versatile pieces that work harder.

Wanderleisure at Encircled

While the term wanderleisure may be new, the idea has always been part of how we design.

From the beginning, we've believed clothing should help women move comfortably through life, not ask them to change outfits every few hours.

That's why our collections focus on thoughtful details like reversible designs, breathable fabrics, versatile silhouettes, and timeless styles that work for travel, work, weekends, and everything in between.

We've found that the pieces people keep reaching for aren't always the newest ones. They're the ones that quietly make everyday life a little easier.

Wanderleisure isn't about buying a whole new wardrobe. It's about rethinking what your wardrobe is there to do. Instead of filling your closet with clothes for every possible occasion, imagine owning fewer pieces that work across many of them.

Comfortable enough to travel in. Polished enough to wear to dinner. Versatile enough to mix, match, and wear on repeat.

When your clothes can keep up with your day, getting dressed becomes one less thing to think about. And that's really what wanderleisure is all about.
