The Secret DIY For Nourished, Dandruff-Free Hair

The Secret DIY For Nourished, Dandruff-Free Hair

Travel Essentials. Encircled creates versatile minimalist clothes with the everyday traveler in mind. Each piece is Made in Canada, out of sustainable, and eco friendly materials.

I first met Victoria Beretta in the fall of 2015 when we became co-workers at a local jewellery store. A few weeks into working together, Victoria began bringing in candles to work that she’d handmade herself (and they were fantastic). Being incredibly modest, she’d brush off our inquiries and exclamations about how great they smelled, how did she do it, and please make more.

In the winter she told us that she, and her now business partner Melissa Condotta, had been experimenting for their soon-to-be apothecary, Sunday’s Company. Since then I’ve witnessed the two of them labour, love, and create a thoughtful and (trust me, I know) effective herbal skin-care line. Below, the two of them share an easy at home DIY for an herbal hair rinse that we’re excited to be able to share with you!

A DIY Apple Cider Vinegar Herbal Hair Rinse

by Sunday's Company
What You'll Need:
  1. Apple Cider Vinegar
  2. Dried herbs of choice
  3. Boiling water
  4. Essential oil (optional)
  5. Small saucepan
  6. Glass jar or bottle
Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple Cider Vinegar (also known as ACV) helps restore and maintain PH balance of the scalp. It’s an antimicrobial, so it helps kill bacteria and fungus which are often the underlying causes of dandruff and hair loss. It also cleanses and clarifies hair, while leaving it shiny. (Note: the vinegar-y smell goes away once hair is dry).

Herbs

Many herbs are good for all hair types, while some have specific benefits for different types of hair and scalp. You can buy herbs at a local herb store, like Herbie's Herbs in Toronto, or online at Mountain Rose Herbs. Or if you're lucky and have a lush backyard, you can pick and dry them yourself.

Some good herbs for all hair types:

  • Horsetail - contains silica, which strengthens hair and promotes hair growth
  • Rosemary - brings circulation to the scalp and stimulates the follicles
  • Nettle - strengthens and nourishes all hair types

We recommend experimenting with other herbs that suit your hair colour/type and scalp. For example, chamomile brings out natural highlights in blonde or light brown hair, rosemary and parsley are good for dark hair, sage will darken graying hair, catnip battles split ends, marshmallow root conditions, and nettles will control dandruff.

Ingredients

4 tablespoons of ACV

1/4 cup dried herbs of choice (use more for a stronger infusion, if desired)

2 cups boiling water

Optional: 5 to 10 drops essential oil of choice

Instructions
  1. Boil water in a small saucepan.
  2. Add the herbs (either in a tea bag/coffee filter/cheesecloth, or add them loose and strain afterwards). Cover and allow the "tea" to steep for at least 15 minutes. For a stronger infusion, use more dried herb and simmer for 15 minutes before allowing to cool.
  3. Remove herbs and allow your infusion to cool. Then add the ACV and essential oils.
  4. The rinse should be used the day you make it or refrigerated for later use.
  5. Once you have rinsed the shampoo out of your hair, pour the ACV rinse on your hair and massage your scalp. Avoid getting the rinse in your eyes, particularly if you have used essential oils. You can apply the rinse cold or warm.
  6. Rinse it out with fresh (ideally, cold) water or, for extra conditioning benefits, just leave it in and towel dry hair. The vinegar scent will disappear as your hair dries.

Herbal hair rinses nourish the scalp, strengthen hair, boost shine and remedy scalp conditions like dandruff, all without chemicals and parabens. These rinses can be added to your current routine, whether you use shampoo and conditioner, or if you have adopted a 'no 'poo' lifestyle. Best of all, it's simple to make.
